Making peg dolls is one of my favorite craft activities and doing it for Halloween means you can have some really cute and spooky figurines to decorate around the house. This activity is also great for kids to do with you. It’s rather simple and cheap to make.
HERE IS WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- Two wooden peg dolls
- A pair of scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Variations of Felt – I picked black and purple
- Painter Markers – White, Black & Red
- Safety Pin
The first step is to paint your dolls. I choose to use paint markers as much as possible. It allows for a smoother finish (unless your marker doesn’t work and you have to pivot to paint) and a cleaner area.
The next step is to work on the witches hat. Fold the black felt in half and cut a shape on the crease, similar to a half moon. This is the best way to make a perfect circle.
Then do the exact same thing again with the circle you just cut out. That will leave you with a circle with a hole in the middle, that will be placed and glued over your witches head.
Next is to finish that hat, by cutting two triangles out of the black felt. I like to make one slightly bigger than the other so I have room to sew the edges together.
Take the smaller triangle and use it as the front of your witches hat. Glue the bottom edges to the wooden doll head, right where the circle part of the felt and the head meet. Then take the larger triangle and place it behind the smaller one. This is where your safety pin will come in handy. Use the safety pin to hold the two pieces of felt triangles together while you stitch the sides together. You can either have a clean stitch that is not visible, using the same colored thread as your felt or for a more kitschy look, use a vibrant color. Then cut a thin ribbon of the other color fabric, mine was purple, and glue around the edge of the triangle. This will complete the witches hat.
The next part is making the capes for each. I use the same method for both. Place your doll on your felt and wrap the felt around your doll. It’s easy to just measure it with your eye. Cut a square. Placing the doll in the middle of your square felt, cut the end of the felt where the doll body ends. That way they can stand on their own. Then take the corners of the felt, right below the head, and glue them together. This will give it the cape shape.
This is when I go in and finish the faces. For a cleaner look, use a fine point pen to complete the faces.
And that’s it. You have yourself some witch and vampire dolls.
